COCOA GENETIC LINKAGE MAP

Project Leader : Lea Johnsiul

BACKGROUND

What is a Genetic Linkage Map?

It is like a road with DNA markers as signs. Valuable traits like CPB and black pod resistance are like buildings between the signs on the road. Thus to find the CPB resistant “building” look for the DNA marker “signs” closest to the building.

How can a Genetic Linkage Map help?

  • It will enable breeders to identify superior plants by just looking at DNA markers associated with desirable traits.
  • Seedlings with DNA markers associated with desirable adult traits can be planted in the field while those that do not – the great majority – are discarded.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT AND COMMERCIALIZATION POTENTIALS

  • Breeders will be able to select cocoa trees with superior adult traits earlier, i.e. at the seedling stage.
  • Breeders will save much time, land-space, labor, and money.
  • Planters will get superior planting materials faster.
