REGULATORY GENE EXPRESSION IN DEVELOPING COCOA PODS Project Leader : Roslina Mohd Shah
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) requires much labor for harvesting. Great savings could be incurred by development of a pod abscission layer that allows the dropping of cocoa pods upon ripening. MADS-box genes in plants are transcription factors involved in regulating numerous developmental processes in root, flowers, developing embryos, fruits & other organs.
A technology is being developed to create trees that naturally abscise fruit when ripe in order to reduce harvesting costs.
