BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF COCOA DISEASES USING ENDOPHYTIC MICROORGANISMS Project Leader : Ishak Zubir
Endophytes are microorganisms (mostly fungi and bacteria) that live within plant tissues, especially leaves, branches, and stems. They cause no apparently harm to the host. The symbiosis between plant and endophyte is mutualistic: the plant protects and feeds the endophyte, which produces beneficial bioactive substances, such as plant growth regulatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and insecticidal compounds.
A biological control of vascular streak dieback (VSD) and black pod diseases was developed using endophytes from cocoa plants.
